A still active volcano, Mt. Gede is one of the most-climbed mountains in Indonesia. The main route begins at Kebon Raya Cibodas, where you obtain a permit, and entails a five to six hour climb to the summit. The track is well marked. About three quarters of the way up is a hut in a clearing known as Kandang Badak (Rhino Stall), where a trail goes off to Mt. Pangrango. Both summits are about an hour’s walk from here. The view from Mt. Gede’s summit is awesome, weather permitting.

Chinese cemeteries are known to have some stunning graves, and this one is no exception. Like all Chinese cemeteries it is located on a slope, this one overlooking the Bandung Plain. It is quite amazing what care and money have been put into the money tombs that cover an area of altogether more than a square kilometer. This grave-yard is really worth seeing.

A well-surfaced road runs through the graveyard, giving access to many fancy-shaped graves. Note the Chinese dragons on many of the roof tops and enjoy the many varieties of Chinese temple design. When you look out over the Bandung Plain and the city, the Bandung Hills are behind you.

Directions:

Go to the Cicaheum bus terminal in the eastern part of Bandung. From here take the road to Ujung Berung and turn left 1.3 km later where a road branches off uphill. This road takes you to the graveyard about 1 km farther on.

An orange mailbox dating from the Dutch colonial period, located to the left of the entrance, welcomes visitors to the Sri Baduga Museum in Bandung.

Few know exactly what exhibits are kept in the building, located at the BKR-Inhoftank crossroads, a busy spot south of the city.

This is understandable, as the museum, inaugurated on June 5, 1980, by Education and Culture Minister Daud Yoesoef, is generally frequented by elementary-, secondary- and high-school students. Their teachers may ask them to find out more about the history and culture of West Java, the province in which they live.

Run by the provincial administration, the museum has a collection of historical objects that mostly describe life in earlier periods of the region’s Sundanese community. According to Rochmaniah, the museum’s marketing officer, the exhibits shown comprise natural objects and cultural artifacts.

“”The diversity of its collection covers 10 classifications ranging from geology, archeology, fine art and technology,”" Rochmaniah, who has worked with the museum for only four years, told The Jakarta Post recently.

To date, it has collected 5,893 exhibits, looked after by 82 employees. That number is inclined to increase in line with a public desire to hand over historical objects to the treasury to serve as resources for the museum.

It has three floors with an open display room, where the Inscription of Ciaruteun, an eight-ton black rock found in Ciampea, Bogor, is put on show. It is one of the seven inscriptions of the Tarumanegara kingdom built in 450 AD, and attracts a lot of visitors.

The first floor displays various natural objects and items of cultural interest found in West Java. Animals and plants of the Leuweung Sancang tropical forest reserve, Garut, can be seen at the entrance, along with a single-horn rhino (Rhinoceros sundaicus), a surviving ancient species whose population keeps shrinking in Ujung Kulon National Park, in the extreme southwest of Java.

A model portraying the geomorphology of Lake Bandung some 6,000 years ago, which resulted from the blockage of the ancient Citarum River by Mt. Tangkuban Perahu’s eruption, provides a glimpse into the history of Bandung and its environs.

The same floor also presents cultural tools used by Sundanese ancestors such as axes in Tasikmalaya and Parigi, Ciamis, and crude knives in Tangerang. Museum personnel estimated that the Mesolithic devices were used for hunting and preparing food.

Animism is indicated by stone graves complete with stone axes and bangles offered to the dead, which were discovered in Mandiracan, Kuningan and Anyer Lor, Serang.

Sundanese traditional community life depicted on the second floor is no less appealing, with molds for cikak and satu cookies from Majalengka and Cirebon respectively, a miniature of the Kampung Naga communal house, Tasikmalaya, classroom furniture of the Dutch period and a replica of the Nagaliman carriage of Cirebon’s sultanate.

Another heritage item dating from Dutch colonial times includes a grave dome measuring one meter by 0.5 meter, found in Dayeuhkolot, southern Bandung, before being moved later to the Christian graveyard of Kerkhof, Jl. Padjadjaran.

It belonged to Anna Maria, who died on Dec. 28, 1756, the daughter of Sgt. de Groote, a Dutch soldier stationed in Bandung. There are also village chief stamps of Cibodas, Ciparay and Bandung, of the same period, that were donated by Garut residents.

On the third floor are different kinds of Sundanese musical instruments like flutes, zithers and gamelan, besides wooden and leather puppets, as well as traditional wedding attire. The museum also keeps over 140 ancient manuscripts. Regrettably, owing to the small number of translators and limited financial resources, only 35 texts have been translated into Indonesian.

The diversity of the items is what prompts schoolteachers to take or assign their students to the museum. During the Travel Exchange (Travex) 2005 exhibition held in Bandung in the middle of last year, Sri Baduga was one of the tourist destinations that attracted guests from Singapore and Malaysian.

Rochmaniah said she received about 100,000 visitors per year, mostly students. They usually come Mondays through Fridays, with the general public predominating at weekends,”" she added.

Given the extent of its collection, however, the museum provides inadequate information. Amanda, a second-year state junior high school student in Bandung complained about the absence of guides. “”If no personnel are available, at least there should be booklets to describe historical facts for us,”" she said.

Fachrich, Amanda’s friend, pointed to the dirty walls of the building. “”The brown stains on the walls make it look sleazy. Museums should be tidy and clean — like those abroad,”" he remarked.

Anda ingin menghirup segarnya udara Kota Bandung? Datanglah ke kawasan cagar alam Taman Hutan Raya (THR) Juanda. Kadar oksigen udara di kawasan ini jauh lebih baik ketimbang di tengah Kota Bandung. Udara di ibukota Jawa Barat ini masih cukup sejuk, namun kawasan THR Juanda menyimpan puncak kesejukan itu. Maklum, kawasan ini merupakan paru-paru kota Bandung.

Hutan Juanda dikenal oleh orang Sunda tempo dulu dengan nama Guha Pakar alias Gua Pakar. Entah dari mana asal nama itu, tapi di hutan ini terdapat gua peninggalan penjajah Jepang dan Belanda. Gua ini berada di sebelah timur kawasan hutan lindung Dago Pakar atau THR Djuanda, Kabupaten Bandung.

THR Juanda adalah wilayah sangat alami paling dekat dengan pusat Kota Bandung, hanya sekitar 7 kilometer. Jarak ini bisa ditempuh 50 menit dari alun-alun Kota Bandung atau 20 menit dari Jalan Ir. Juanda. Angkutan umum trayek Abdul Muis-Dago, Riung Bandung-Dago, atau Ciroyom-Ciburial dapat mengantar kita sampai ke Terminal Dago. Dari Terminal dago, kita bisa jalan kaki atau naik ojek untuk sampai ke THR Juanda.

Untuk Anda yang gemar naik gunung alias hiking, dari hutan ini dapat melanjutkan perjalanan ke tempat wisata Maribaya Lembang. Jarak tempuh cukup dilalui sekitar dua jam jalan kaki untuk mencapai Maribaya.

Jalan tembus dari Gua Pakar ke situs wisata Maribaya dapat melalui Gua Jepang, lalu lewat jalan setapak di antara pegunungan yang memiliki pemandangan alam eksotik. Aliran Sungai Cikapundung yang berhulu di Maribaya, dapat ditemui sepanjang jalan setapak. “Untuk hiking, persedian makanan dan minuman harus dibawa sendiri, sebab jarang ditemui warung atau perkampungan di sana yang menjual makanan,” kata Afandi, yang baru saja berkunjung ke kawasan itu.

Setelah puas menikmati pemandangan pegunungan, kita akan sampai di pintu masuk tempat wisata air terjun Maribaya. “Air terjun yang sangat indah dan cukup jernih akan menghilangkan kelelahan kita setelah menempuh perjalanan dua jam,” ujar Afandi. Dari Maribaya, untuk kembali ke Bandung bisa memakai kendaraan umum dari sana atau dari Pasar Lembang.

Pada zaman kolonial Belanda, di taman ini pernah dibangun waduk untuk pusat tenaga listrik. Sumber air yang sangat banyak ini sekarang dimanfaatkan Perusahaan Daerah Air Minum (PDAM) sebagai sumber sumur resapan airnya. Gua-gua yang terdapat di sana pada masa penjajahan Belanda dan Jepang digunakan sebagai tempat penyimpanan bahan makanan dan senjata. Kini, para pengunjung dapat melihat-lihat gua tersebut. Pengelola menyediakan senter-senter sewaan jika pengunjung ingin memasuki gua.

Di balik eksotisnya pemandangan alam, sepanjang kawasan Dago Pakar ke Maribaya menyimpan cerita misteri yang mengerikan. Menurut Undang, 52 tahun, kuncen (penjaga pintu) kawasan itu, pada malam hari sering terdengar auman orang kesakitan dan suara-suara binatang aneh. “Suara-suara aneh itu berasal dari arwah para penjajah Jepang, Belanda, dan sekelompok jin penghuni hutan Juanda,” kata Undang.

Percaya atau tidak, sejumlah pemuda yang pernah berkemah di sana mengaku sering mendengar suara-suara misterius itu, bahkan ada juga yang sampai kesurupan. Bagi Anda yang nyalinya ciut, mesti berpikir ulang kalau ingin mengunjungi kawasan ini pada malam hari.

Namun, Arman, warga setempat memberi tip. “Supaya tidak mendengar apalagi melihat makhluk aneh di sana, mereka yang hendak berkemah harus minta izin kuncen setempat,” katanya. Caranya, cukup menghubungi penjaga Gua Pakar itu dan minta izin akan berkemah di sekitar hutan tersebut.

Dari jumlah dan jenisnya, pohon yang tumbuh di kawasan THR Juanda sangat beraneka ragam. Selain menjadi paru-paru kota, di antara pohon besar maupun kecil itu ada yang bisa dipakai untuk obat, bahkan ada sebuah pohon besar sejenis kaboa yang dikeramatkan oleh warga.

Menurut Arman, pohon keramat itu terletak di tengah hutan dan hanya bisa ditemukan oleh kuncennya di tengah keheningan malam. Bila ada pengunjung yang ingin melihat pohon keramat, ia harus pergi bersama kuncen di waktu tengah malam. Sayangnya, kata Arman, “Dari sertiap 1.000 orang, cuma satu yang bisa melihat pohon itu.”

Anda yang takut masuk ke tengah hutan tidak bakal bisa melihat pohon keramat itu. Namun, yang pasti Anda tetap bisa pemandangan alam dan air pegunungan dengan kadar mineral tinggi di kawasan THR Juanda dan Maribaya. Kesejukan udaranya dan kejernihan airnya, membuat kawasan ini menjadi tujuan warga yang ingin menghilangkan stres dan mendinginkan pikiran.

Kalau sempat sampai ke air terjun Maribaya, Anda bisa langsung minum air tersebut. Kelelahan Anda akan terobati, dan tidak perlu khawatir akan sakit perut.

Some 12 km west of Pangandaran along the coastal road is Batu Hiu, a bizarre rock right on the coats. Its name means “shark rock,” though shark are not to be found anywhere in the whole coastal area. This huge rock is covered with smooth grass, ha prop-rooted pandanus palms, and provides a fine vista over the whole bay. A car park right is beside it, but because the parking fee is ridiculously high, you should try to park outside. Still, an admission fee is required.

Between Pangandaran and Batu Hiu is a sign pointing south to Karang Tirta, an alleged “tourist object.” Also, the admission fee is excessive.

A little farther west of Batu Hiu is Cijulang village, about 15 km from Pangandaran. Three kilometers past Cijulang you come to the Cijulang River. From here you can take a boat trip up river to the magical Green Canyon. Slow down when you see the steel girder bridge over the river and you will soon be offered a boat for hire. Bargain for about $10. The round trip in a dugout through half-open for get up the river with its green water takes two to three hours- your help in addling is greatly appreciated. The scenery is lovely. The journey ends here the river emerges from a huge opening in a rock. Here you can swim to the river or search for the drip-stone cave in the rocks.

A few kilometers beyond the steel girder bridge is Batu Karas, an idyllic beach just a forty-five minute driving from Pangandaran. Turn left immediately after the bridge (look for the road sign to Batu Karas). After about fifteen minutes you reach a black sand beach, a tiny fishing village and few bungalows. The surf is gentle, less dangerous than in Pangandaran, and good surfing. On the west side of the beach is a cliff from where you have a wonderful view east along the coast.

A pleasant one-hour round trip from Pangandaran is a visit to Karang Nini (karang means “coral”). It’s a twenty-minute drive from Pangandaran) 9 km from the bus terminal) on the road to Banjar. If you came through Banjar on the way to Pangandaran, you may have seen the sign on the road side. Karang Nini is a recreation park on a limestone ridge with a lookout tower from which you have a beautiful view over the bay and peninsula.
