About three quarters of the way up is a hut in a clearing known as Kandang Badak (Rhino Stall), where a trail goes off to Mt. Pangrango. Both summits are about an hour’s walk from here. The view from Mt.  Gede’s summit is awesome, weather permitting.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Few know exactly what exhibits are kept in the building, located at the BKR-Inhoftank crossroads, a busy spot south of the city.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This is understandable, as the museum, inaugurated on June 5, 1980, by Education and Culture Minister Daud Yoesoef, is generally frequented by elementary-, secondary- and high-school students. Their teachers may ask them to find out more about the history and culture of West Java, the province in which they live.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Run by the provincial administration, the museum has a collection of historical objects that mostly describe life in earlier periods of the region&#8217;s Sundanese community. According to Rochmaniah, the museum&#8217;s marketing officer, the exhibits shown comprise natural objects and cultural artifacts.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">&#8220;&#8221;The diversity of its collection covers 10 classifications ranging from geology, archeology, fine art and technology,&#8221;" Rochmaniah, who has worked with the museum for only four years, told <em>The Jakarta Post</em> recently.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">To date, it has collected 5,893 exhibits, looked after by 82 employees. That number is inclined to increase in line with a public desire to hand over historical objects to the treasury to serve as resources for the museum.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">It has three floors with an open display room, where the Inscription of Ciaruteun, an eight-ton black rock found in Ciampea, Bogor, is put on show. It is one of the seven inscriptions of the Tarumanegara kingdom built in 450 AD, and attracts a lot of visitors.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The first floor displays various natural objects and items of cultural interest found in West Java. Animals and plants of the Leuweung Sancang tropical forest reserve, Garut, can be seen at the entrance, along with a single-horn rhino (<em>Rhinoceros sundaicus</em>), a surviving ancient species whose population keeps shrinking in Ujung Kulon National Park, in the extreme southwest of Java.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A model portraying the geomorphology of Lake Bandung some 6,000 years ago, which resulted from the blockage of the ancient Citarum River by Mt. Tangkuban Perahu&#8217;s eruption, provides a glimpse into the history of Bandung and its environs.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The same floor also presents cultural tools used by Sundanese ancestors such as axes in Tasikmalaya and Parigi, Ciamis, and crude knives in Tangerang. Museum personnel estimated that the Mesolithic devices were used for hunting and preparing food.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Animism is indicated by stone graves complete with stone axes and bangles offered to the dead, which were discovered in Mandiracan, Kuningan and Anyer Lor, Serang.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Sundanese traditional community life depicted on the second floor is no less appealing, with molds for <em>cikak</em> and <em>satu</em> cookies from Majalengka and Cirebon respectively, a miniature of the Kampung Naga communal house, Tasikmalaya, classroom furniture of the Dutch period and a replica of the Nagaliman carriage of Cirebon&#8217;s sultanate.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Another heritage item dating from Dutch colonial times includes a grave dome measuring one meter by 0.5 meter, found in Dayeuhkolot, southern Bandung, before being moved later to the Christian graveyard of Kerkhof, Jl. Padjadjaran.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">It belonged to Anna Maria, who died on Dec. 28, 1756, the daughter of Sgt. de Groote, a Dutch soldier stationed in Bandung. There are also village chief stamps of Cibodas, Ciparay and Bandung, of the same period, that were donated by Garut residents.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">On the third floor are different kinds of Sundanese musical instruments like flutes, zithers and gamelan, besides wooden and leather puppets, as well as traditional wedding attire. The museum also keeps over 140 ancient manuscripts. Regrettably, owing to the small number of translators and limited financial resources, only 35 texts have been translated into Indonesian.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The diversity of the items is what prompts schoolteachers to take or assign their students to the museum. During the Travel Exchange (Travex) 2005 exhibition held in Bandung in the middle of last year, Sri Baduga was one of the tourist destinations that attracted guests from Singapore and Malaysian.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Rochmaniah said she received about 100,000 visitors per year, mostly students. They usually come Mondays through Fridays, with the general public predominating at weekends,&#8221;" she added.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Given the extent of its collection, however, the museum provides inadequate information. Amanda, a second-year state junior high school student in Bandung complained about the absence of guides. &#8220;&#8221;If no personnel are available, at least there should be booklets to describe historical facts for us,&#8221;" she said.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Fachrich, Amanda&#8217;s friend, pointed to the dirty walls of the building. &#8220;&#8221;The brown stains on the walls make it look sleazy. Museums should be tidy and clean &#8212; like those abroad,&#8221;" he remarked.</p>

<!-- PPCZine - ad code ends --></div><p style="text-align: justify;">Just 110 unsold works of the late artist Barli Sasmitawinata remain in Bandung&#8217;s Barli Museum as part of an exhibition held since the painter died earlier this year, aged 85.<span id="more-753"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">According to his daughter-in-law, Agung Wiwekaputra, the family doesn&#8217;t want the masterpieces to go on the market. But the pressure to sell remains, for many collectors are keen to buy works from the exhibition.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">There&#8217;s been no slump in enthusiasm for the artist and his work since he passed away on Feb. 8.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A steady stream of local and overseas visitors to the museum continues, and the fact that the artist is deceased seems to spur additional curiosity. Field trips from elementary through senior high schools are also frequent.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">&#8220;&#8221;The number of visitors has remained constant prior to and since Barli died,&#8221;" Wiwekaputra said, though she didn&#8217;t reveal the actual figures. &#8220;&#8221;We&#8217;re proud of this, because so many are young people keen to know more about his work.&#8221;"</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">It was Barli&#8217;s dream many years ago to start a museum, but the idea took time to germinate. The proposal was supported by his large family and by Charles Ali, a young architect who gave shape to the concept in 1992.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Barli was born in Bandung and educated in the Netherlands and France. One of the principle visions of the Barli Museum was to provide a showcase that would demonstrate how his painting style had developed over the decades.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">He started with realism, and then moved through impressionism and into expressionism. Rural lifestyles were a hallmark of his art.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Early in his career (he took up the palette in 1935 while still a teenager), Barli became a member of the seminal collective, Lima Bandung Kelompok (Bandung five).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Other members of the grouping were master impressionist Affandi (1907-1990), perhaps the most acclaimed Indonesian painter from the last century; social realist Hendra Gunawan (1918-1983), who featured the lives of ordinary people; landscape artist Wahdi (1917-1996), and Indonesia&#8217;s &#8220;&#8221;of realism&#8221;" Sudarso (1914-2006), famous for his portraits of beautiful women.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The Barli Museum later became a center for the appreciation of the finer things in life, promoting and celebrating the history and development of art in the Bandung region.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The facility has also helped strengthen the public&#8217;s appreciation of art and the important contributions made by creative individuals to the intellectual life of the nation.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Many events and activities have been held in the museum. Among them have been exhibitions of arts and crafts for sale, formal and informal discussions on art and culture, and meetings to raise social, economic and technical issues.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Space has been allocated for visitors and locals to talk about developments in science and the arts. It also has shops selling souvenirs and other merchandise, and rooms for training, ceramics and publishing.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The Barli Museum&#8217;s efforts have been part of an endeavor to boost art appreciation in Indonesia, to conserve important works for their historical and cultural values, and to commemorate Barli&#8217;s name as a critical figure in Indonesian painting.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">&#8220;&#8221;Up to now, all the students who have come here want to know more about painting and have been encouraged by what they&#8217;ve seen and learned,&#8221;" said Wiwekaputra.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">&#8220;&#8221;Although the number has not yet reached the hundreds, since Barli passed away we feel that interest is increasing.&#8221;"</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">As so often happens in the art world, the value of an artist&#8217;s work generally escalates after their death, and when enthusiasts are keen to buy from limited stock.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This certainly holds true for Barli; many collectors are vying for his artwork and their value has jumped sharply &#8212; although the museum will not sell from its collection.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The same thing happened when Hendra Gunawan died 24 years ago. While he was still active at the easel, prices for his art remained static, but following his death, some of his creations reached a staggering Rp 1 billion (US$110,000).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Art connoisseur Heru Hikayat from the Bandung Institute of Technology said holding back the work of a deceased painter was a market strategy. Staging a retrospective featuring aspects of the artist&#8217;s life would also help boost prices.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Ranking equally with the Barli exhibit are the museum&#8217;s activities promoting appreciation of fine arts and creating a center of excellence and education. These were the lifelong goals of the artist, who co-founded the fine arts department at the Bandung teachers&#8217; college in 1961.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Heru said he hoped the Barli Museum would help enhance the reputation of Bandung as a center of culture, joining other public and private collections to consolidate the West Java city&#8217;s fame.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Bandung already has a geology museum and the Sri Baduga Museum, which has a collection of artifacts, old manuscripts and historical farming equipment used by Sundanese farmers.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Meanwhile, the Mandala Wangsit Siliwangi Museum has preserved weapons and artifacts from the independence struggle. Bandung also has a philately museum and the Asia-Africa Museum, the latter of which holds an historical collection from the inaugural 1956 Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Other fine arts galleries in the city include the A.D. Pirous Gallery, the Pohaci Studio, the R-66 Gallery, the Hidayat Gallery and the Selasar Seni Sunaryo Gallery.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Besides learning more about art and culture, and enjoying and appreciating the celebrated painter&#8217;s works, visitors to the Barli Museum can discover more about the artist&#8217;s life and philosophy by reading the 2004 biography, <em>Kehidupanku Bersama Barli</em> (My life with Barli), written by his wife Nakisbandiah.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A separate biography of the artist was published in 2003 as part of a discourse on Indonesian art.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><em>Kehidupanku Bersama Barli</em> features Barli&#8217;s work from the 1943-2004 period, and was Nakisbandiah&#8217;s special gift to her husband on his 83rd birthday, when the artist held a solo exhibition.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Half the 200-page book is devoted to his work, the rest to comments and tributes by aficionados and supporters, including collector Oei Hong Djien, former education and culture minister Fuad Hasan, academic Jim Supangkat, collector Agus Dermawan, art curator and academic Mamannoor, and the former tourism and culture minister, I Gde Ardika.</p>

<!-- PPCZine - ad code ends --></div><p style="text-align: justify;">Some 12 km west of Pangandaran along the coastal road is Batu Hiu, a bizarre rock right on the coats. Its name means “shark rock,” though shark are not to be found anywhere in the whole coastal area. This huge rock is covered with smooth grass, ha prop-rooted pandanus palms, and provides a fine vista over the whole bay. A car park right is beside it, but because the parking fee is ridiculously high, you should try to park outside. Still, an admission fee is required.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Between Pangandaran and Batu Hiu is a sign pointing south to Karang Tirta, an alleged “tourist object.” Also, the admission fee is excessive.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A little farther west of Batu Hiu is Cijulang village, about 15 km from Pangandaran. Three kilometers past Cijulang you come to the Cijulang River. From here you can take a boat trip up river to the magical Green Canyon. Slow down when you see the steel girder bridge over the river and you will soon be offered a boat for hire. Bargain for about $10. The round trip in a dugout through half-open for get up the river with its green water takes two to three hours- your help in addling is greatly appreciated. The scenery is lovely. The journey ends here the river emerges from a huge opening in a rock. Here you can swim to the river or search for the drip-stone cave in the rocks.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A few kilometers beyond the steel girder bridge is Batu Karas, an idyllic beach just a forty-five minute driving from Pangandaran. Turn left immediately after the bridge (look for the road sign to Batu Karas). After about fifteen minutes you reach a black sand beach, a tiny fishing village and few bungalows. The surf is gentle, less dangerous than in Pangandaran, and good surfing. On the west side of the beach is a cliff from where you have a wonderful view east along the coast.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A pleasant one-hour round trip from Pangandaran is a visit to Karang Nini (karang means “coral”). It’s a twenty-minute drive from Pangandaran) 9 km from the bus terminal) on the road to Banjar. If you came through Banjar on the way to Pangandaran, you may have seen the sign on the road side. Karang Nini is a recreation park on a limestone ridge with a lookout tower from which you have a beautiful view over the bay and peninsula.</p>

Di sini, selain bisa melihat proses pembuatan angklung dari A sampai Z, juga bisa berbincang langsung dengan para perajin.<span id="more-240"></span></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Para perajin umumnya senang melayani pertanyaan meski pertanyaannya itu-itu saja, pertanyaan mendasar. Tetapi yang penting, perajinnya sendiri antusias menjawab, tidak ogah-ogahan. Salah seorang perajin, Rakhmat, yang katanya sudah 31 tahun menekuni kerajinan angklung menjelaskan, bambu yang paling bagus sebagai bahan baku angklung adalah jenis “awi hideung”. <em>Awi</em> dalam bahasa Sunda berarti “bambu”, dan <em>hideung</em> berarti “hitam”.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><em>Awi hideung</em> yang paling bagus untuk dibuat angklung adalah yang sudah berumur empat tahun yang ditebang saat musim kemarau,” kata Rakhmat sambil sesekali menala nada angklung diatonis itu dengan alat pengukur getaran (hertz).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Di Tatar Sunda, dikenal berbagai jenis bambu atau “awi”. Selain <em>awi hideung</em> ada juga <em>awi gombong</em>, <em>awi haur koneng</em>, dan <em>awi tali</em>. Untuk membuat angklung, <em>awi hideung</em> dipotong dua jengkel lengan orang dewasa dari tanah. Setelah dipotong, bambu ditaruh dengan cara diberdirikan, sehingga lama-kelamaan daunnya berguguran. Daun bambu yang berbentuk lonjong itu otomotis berguguran sementara badan bambu terus mengering.<br />

Setelah mengering, bambu kemudian di-“unun” atau diasapi dengan api yang tidak menyentuh langsung badan bambu. Ini dimaksudkan agar bambu benar-benar kering sehingga menghasilkan bunyi yang nyaring. Setelah benar-benar kering, bambu dipotong-potong sesuai nada yang dihasilkan. Semakin kecil ukuran bambu, semakin tinggi nada yang dihasilkan. Semakin besar, semakin rendah pula nada yang dihasilkan.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="/TEMPORARY%2520FOLDER/DIENY-YUSUF.COM/tayang%2520baru/mang%2520angklung/Kompas_Com%2520-%2520Simfoni_mozart_dari_buluh_bambu_2.mht%23"></a>Uniknya, dalam satu angklung, terdapat dua sampai tiga nada sekaligus, sehingga kalau dibunyikan <a href="/TEMPORARY%2520FOLDER/DIENY-YUSUF.COM/tayang%2520baru/mang%2520angklung/Kompas_Com%2520-%2520Simfoni_mozart_dari_buluh_bambu_2.mht%23"></a><a href="/TEMPORARY%2520FOLDER/DIENY-YUSUF.COM/tayang%2520baru/mang%2520angklung/Kompas_Com%2520-%2520Simfoni_mozart_dari_buluh_bambu_2.mht%23"></a>akan menjadi <em>accord</em> yang harmonis. Bayangkan kalau puluhan angklung dibunyikan secara bersamaan, benar-benar menghasilkan <em>accord </em>yang harmonis dan elegan dalam sebuah orkestra.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="http://dieny.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/atraksi-asngklung-anak-anak.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-246" title="atraksi-asngklung-anak-anak" src="http://dieny.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/atraksi-asngklung-anak-anak.jpg" alt="atraksi-asngklung-anak-anak" width="298" height="225" /></a>Itu sekilas mengenai pembuatan angklung, tidak terlalu teknis karena di sini saya tidak sedang mengajarkan cara-cara membuat angklung. Sebelum tiba pukul 15.30, kami semua sudah duduk di Bale Karesmen, yakni gedung utama pertunjukan yang disebut “Kaulinan Urang Lembur” (tempat main orang desa). Di Bale Karesmen sudah banyak pengunjung yang berjejer rapi, termasuk 50 pelancong Malaysia dan sejumlah turis bule. Mereka semua sama seperti saya, sama-sama ingin segera melihat pertunjukan angklung yang dimainkan anak-anak sekitar Saung Angklung Udjo.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Saung Angklung Udjo sudah berdiri sejak 1967, lebih dari 40 tahun. Didirikan oleh seniman Sunda bernama Mang Udjo dan istrinya, Uum Sumiati. Mang Udjo belajar angklung dari “mahaguru” angklung, yakni Daeng Soetigna. Padaeng inilah, demikian tokoh angklung Sunda ini dipanggil, yang memperkenalkan angklung dengan nada diatonis yang berpotensi diterima sebagai instrumen musik internasional.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="\TEMPORARY%20FOLDER\DIENY-YUSUF.COM\tayang%20baru\mang%20angklung\Kompas_Com%20-%20Simfoni_mozart_dari_buluh_bambu_2.mht#"></a>Acara dituntun oleh dua master of ceremony menggunakan dua bahasa, Inggris dan Indonesia. Satu gadis remaja, satu lagi terbilang masih anak-anak. Namun keduanya mampu berbahasa Inggris dengan baik, bahasa Inggris yang tidak sekadar hapalan, tetapi memang bisa dipraktikkan.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="/TEMPORARY%2520FOLDER/DIENY-YUSUF.COM/tayang%2520baru/mang%2520angklung/Kompas_Com%2520-%2520Simfoni_mozart_dari_buluh_bambu_2.mht%23"></a>Acara dibuka dengan pertunjukkan wayang golek. Bagi saya, wayang golek tidaklah terlalu asing. Saat ada program “wayang masuk kampung” pertengahan tahun 1980-an dulu, saya kerap menonton Asep Sunandar Sunarya dari padepokan Giri Harja memamerkan keahliannya memainkan wayang golek. Di tangan Asep, benda mati itu seakan-akan menjadi hidup. Tokoh-tokoh pewayangan seperti Gatotkaca, Dorna, dan Punakawan menjadi sedemikian hidup saat menari, berkelahi, sampai ketika wayang itu mengeluarkan darah dari mulutnya. Asep benar-benar memodifikasi wayang golek menjadi sebuah tontotan yang menawan.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="/TEMPORARY%2520FOLDER/DIENY-YUSUF.COM/tayang%2520baru/mang%2520angklung/Kompas_Com%2520-%2520Simfoni_mozart_dari_buluh_bambu_2.mht%23"></a><a href="http://dieny.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/penonton-main-angklung-di-sau.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-247" title="penonton-main-angklung-di-sau" src="http://dieny.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/penonton-main-angklung-di-sau.jpg" alt="penonton-main-angklung-di-sau" width="298" height="225" /></a>Akan tetapi, di Bale Karesmen ini, pertunjukan wayang yang biasanya memakan waktu 6-7 jam, disingkat menjadi seperempat jam saja. Tujuannya memang tidak hanya mengenalkan wayang dari segi permainan dan jalan ceritanya, tetapi juga bagaimana ki dalang memainkan wayang itu secara solo, meski tetap diiringi <em>nayaga </em>(gamelan) dan <em>juru alok</em> yang lengkap. <em>Juru alok</em> adalah orang yang memberi komentar setiap kali ki dalang berceloteh atau bertanya tentang sesuatu.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Kadang ucapan <em>juru alok</em> ini sangat mengena sehingga mengundang tawa. Misalnya saat ki dalang memainkan tokoh Si Cepot, Cepot mencari teman-temannya dan bertanya, “Pada <em>kamarana</em> (kemana) yah teman-teman <em>sayah</em>?” <em>Juru alok</em> langsung menjawab, “Pada ngantri minyak tanah dan beras murah kali.”</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Pertunjukkan itu sendiri melibatkan sedikitnya 100 orang yang umumnya anak-anak. Mulai dari pertunjukkan khitanan massal, tari topeng, sampai orkestra klasik dengan memainkan Symphony 40 dari Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Saat mereka memainkan simfoni yang akrab dalam nada <em>ring back tone</em> itu, saya tidak percaya bahwa itu dihasilkan oleh bunyi-bunyian dari bambu, angklung. Bahan baku yang bisa dipakai untuk tangga tradisional, bilik rumah, mainan bedil lodong yang menghasilkan bunyi menggelegar, sampai dimakan saat masih berbentuk <em>rebung</em>, ternyata menghasilkan nada yang tidak kalah elegan dengan piano.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Bagaimana mungkin simfoni yang biasa terdengar dari sebuah orkestra rumit bisa mengalir dengan lancar namun indah dari buluh-buluh bambu. Terus terang, sambutan paling meriah dari penonton terjadi saat simfoni Mozart ini mengalun merdu.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Lebih penting lagi, pertunjukkan itu benar-benar tidak asal “narsis”, yakni menonjolkan kehebatan si seniman sendiri di atas panggung, tetapi benar-benar melibatkan penonton lainnya. Penonton diajak serta bermain angklung bersama dengan lagu-lagu yang sudah akrab di telinga seperti “Burung Kakaktua” dan “The Song of De Re Mi” yang populer lewat film “The Sound of Music” itu. Semua lagu dimainkan oleh orkestra lengkap, melibatkan arumba (alunan rumpun bambu), saron, gong, sampai drum. Tentu saja tidak lupa angklung, yang menjadi “ikon” padepokan seni itu.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Saat bermain angkung bersama, seluruh penonton diberi pinjam angklung, mulai yang menghasilkan nada <em>do</em> sampai <em>ti</em>. Jadilah ratusan penonton itu terbagi dalam  sedikitnya tujuh kelompok. Dua instruktur membimbing penonton dengan cepat nada-nada yang harus dibunyikan hanya dengan melihat gerakan tangan kanan tertentu sebagai kode. Setiap nada diwakili oleh gerakan tangan yang berbeda. Memang diperlukan konsentrensi tinggi.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Namun kenyataannya, dalam beberapa menit saja sebuah lagu “Falling in Love” yang dipopulerkan Julio Iglesias, terdengar mengalun merdu, sebuah orkestra yang dihasilkan para penonton yang mungkin baru pertama kali memegang angklung!  Tidak terasa, tiga lagu </p>

Soalnya sudah sejak lama saya mendengar sanggar kesenian alias padepokan seni di Bandung, Jawa Barat, ini yang bernama Saung Angklung Udjo.<span id="more-252"></span></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Benar, nama aslinya memang Saung Angklung Udjo (SAU), bukan USA. Tetapi terus terang, nama USA malah menggelitik rasa ingin tahu orang, termasuk saya.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Kerap saya berkunjung ke Bandung setelah selama lebih 18 tahun meninggalkan kota berjuluk Kota Kembang atau Bumi Parahyangan ini karena bekerja di Jakarta. Antara tahun 1985-1990, saya menghabiskan waktu menuntut ilmu di perguruan tinggi di kota ini. Setiap kali ke Bandung, wisata yang paling kerap saya kunjungi tidak lain wisata kuliner. Maklum, Bandung dikenal sebagai surganya jajanan.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Jadi, wisata ke Bandung kali ini agak lain. Bukan wisata melihat eloknya pemandangan alam<a href="http://dieny.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/souvenir-angklung.jpg"></a> Parahyangan yang hijau di lihat dari Gunung Tangkuban Parahu, bukan wisata mandi air panas di Ciater, bukan mengunjungi “saudara tua” di Kebon Binatang (Bonbin) Bandung yang sangat kawentar ka janapriya (terkenal ke seluruh dunia) itu, bukan pula wisata rohani dan religi ke makam-makam orang suci dulu, juga bukan wisata kuliner yang tidak ada habis-habisnya. Kali ini saya bermaksud wisata seni dengan mengunjungi Saung Angklung Udjo. Ada mungkin bertanya, apa iya itu wisata?</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Ah, saya tidak terlalu peduli dengan istilah. Juga terminologi wisata seni yang barangkali belum bisa diterima dan masuk dalam khasanah ilmu pariwisata. Bagi saya, selain ruh ini di-<em>refresh</em> dengan pertunjukkan kesenian angklung, juga dapat melihat budaya setempat secara langsung. Kita tinggalkan dulu perdebatan soal istilah, mari kita melanjutkan perjalanan.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Melesat dari Jakarta menelusur Jalan Tol Cikampek lantas bersambung terus ke Tol Cipularang, tidaklah terlalu sulit. Memang itu jalan yang paling mudah. Kalau naik kendaraan umum bus, misalnya, dari Jakarta bisa dari dua terminal utama, yakni Lebak Bulus dan Kampung Rambutan. Bus berhenti di terminal Leuwipanjang. Dari terminal ini naik angkot ke jurusan Terminal Cicaheum. Wisata dengan menggunakan sepeda motor tentunya jauh lebih mudah lagi karena bakal terhindar dari kemacetan di beberapa ruas jalan di Bandung ini.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="http://dieny.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/seruling-at-sau.jpg"></a><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-241" title="souvenir-angklung" src="http://dieny.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/souvenir-angklung.jpg" alt="souvenir-angklung" width="298" height="225" />Karena lokasinya berada di Jalan Padasuka No 118, paling gampang memang keluar dari gerbang tol Pasteur, dengan catatan membawa kendaraan roda empat sendiri. Setelah keluar dari gerbang tol Pasteur, terus saja lurus ke arah Jalan Suci menuju Terminal Cicaheum. Sebelum sampai ke Terminal Cicaheum, terdapat Jalan Padasuka yang berbelok ke kiri, jalan dua arah yang menuju padepokan seni Saung Angklung Udjo.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Terus terang, hal yang mendorong saya ingin mengetahui padepokan seni ini gara-gara panas hati dengan negara tetangga kita, Malaysia, negara yang gemar main klaim khasanah budaya milik orang lain, termasuk angklung ini. Masak setelah Reog Ponorogo, batik, dan lagu Rasa Sayange diklaim miliknya sebagaimana halnya Sipadan dan Ligitan, giliran angklung Jawa Barat mau dimiliki pula. Wah, benar-benar tak tahu diri, pikir saya.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Seingat saya, saat pertama kali duduk di kelas satu sekolah dasar tahun 1972 lalu, guru-guru sudah memperkenalkan alat musik tradisional terbuat dari buluh bambu ini. Bagaimana mungkin itu jadi milik Malaysia? Untuk klaim yang satu ini hati saya berteriak, “No Way!”</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Ironisnya, saat saya tiba di Saung Angklung Udjo, Minggu tanggal 25 Mei lalu, sebuah bus besar sudah terparkir di halaman padepokan seni yang luas dan rimbun itu. Saya melihat serombongan orang turun dan langsung menyerbu galeri di padepokan itu untuk belanja. Saya dengar percakapan mereka yang bercampur antara bahasa Melayu dan Inggris. Tidak salah, ini pasti pelancong Malaysia, duga saya.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-242" title="seruling-at-sau" src="http://dieny.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/seruling-at-sau.jpg" alt="seruling-at-sau" width="298" height="225" />Dugaan saya tidak terlalu meleset. Seorang penjaga tiket melalui telepon yang saya kuping mengabarkan mengenai kedatangan pelancong ini. “Lima puluh orang dari Malaysia, Bu,” katanya. Tuh, benar ‘kan Malaysia!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Di luar bahwa mereka suka main klaim, diam-diam saya merasa bersyukur atas kedatangan para pelancong negeri tetangga ini. Bukan karena mereka mendatangkan devisa dan berbelanja banyak oleh-oleh karya seni di Saung Angklung Udjo, tetapi sekaligus ingin sekali kami menunjukkan bahwa angklung adalah anak kandung Bumi Pertiwi, angklung sedemikian mendarah-dagingnya dalam tubuh Tanah Air kami. Wah, tiba-tiba rasa keindonesiaan saya mulai meledak dan menjalari urat nadi.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Beberapa turis bule dan turis Asia lainnya, dari Jepang dan Korea, juga hadir atas jasa baik travel yang mengantarkan mereka ke Saung Angklung Udjo ini. Umumnya para pelancong tidak tahan melihat berbagai kerajinan yang berjejer dan tertata rapi di galeri itu. Antara lain miniatur alat-alat musik berbagai warna seperti gitar, <em>drum</em>, gamelan dan <em>goong</em> (gong), bahkan kendang rampak dan <em>kacapi</em>, alat musik petik khas Sunda. Wayang golek berbagai ukuran juga banyak diminati. Yang terbanyak tentu saja angklung itu sendiri, baik angklung ukuran asli yang bisa dimainkan, maupun angklung akseseoris yang bisa dikalungkan di leher.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Karena saya datang bersama keluarga, kami memesan tiket seharga Rp 50.000 perkepala untuk pertunjukkan yang dimulai pukul 15.30 itu. Sebagaimana warga Jawa Barat, para petugas sangat <em>someah</em> alias sopan, mudah senyum, dan responsif jika diminta pertolongan. Saya berkeliling dulu di galeri yang tempatnya berdampingan dengan gedung pertunjukkan utama, bangunan dengan ruangan yang sangat terbuka berbentuk lingkaran.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Saya membeli seruling mini sebesar kelingking yang harganya Rp5.000. Memang harganya variatif, dari mulai Rp5.000, Rp 10.000, Rp 15.000 sampai termahal Rp 25.000. Entah mengapa saya memilih seruling yang paling mungil, yang dalam bahasa Sunda disebut <em>suling</em> ini. Bukan karena keberatan mengeluarkan uang lebih mahal dari <em>suling</em> yang saya beli, tetapi karena saya memang suka yang kecil-kecil.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Tidak seperti tangga nada diatonis yang memiliki 7 nada (<em>do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti</em>), suling Sunda yang saya beli hanya memiliki 5 nada, yakni <em>da-mi-na-ti-la</em>. Saya mencoba meniupnya dan mencoba menyanyikan lagu <em>Pat Lapat</em>, sebuah lagu melankolis yang sangat terkenal di Tatar Sunda. Lagu itu menceritakan sebuah perahu layar yang terombang-ambing gelombang, yang layarnya putih dan semakin mengecil karena terdorong ke tengah oleh ombak, yang kemudian hilang dari pandangan mata.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="http://dieny.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/wayang-golek-at-sau.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-243" title="wayang-golek-at-sau" src="http://dieny.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/wayang-golek-at-sau.jpg" alt="wayang-golek-at-sau" width="298" height="225" /></a>Ternyata tangan saya masih terampil memainkannya. Alhasil suara suling itu <em>ngagelik</em> (suara melankolis) seakan-akan ditiup oleh maestro dadakan. Di rumah sesekali saya memang meniup <em>recorder</em>, sehingga tidak aneh dengan <em>suling </em>Sunda yang cenderung bersuara melankolis ini. Adakah dalam pertunjukan nanti lagu <em>Pat Lapat</em> ini dimainkan? Saya tidak tahu.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Tetapi sebelum pertunjukan dimulai pukul 15.30 hingga 17.30 menurut jadwal, saya berkesempatan jalan-jalan di seputar padepokan seni karena memang masih punya banyak waktu. Tentu saja saya melihat bagaimana cara pengrajin membuat angklung yang banyak diekspor ke luar negeri ini.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Di Saung Angklung Udjo ini, ada dua tempat pembuatan angklung yang dibiarkan terbuka. Maksudnya agar pengunjung juga dapat melihat proses pembuatannya. Ini juga sekaligus atraksi yang menawan, kerena membuat angklung tidak semata-mata menyusun bilah-bilah bambu yang direnteng dan menghasilkan suara dengan cara digerak-gerakkan itu. Membuat angklung selain harus memiliki keterampilan “tukang”, juga dituntut memiliki kepekaan seni tinggi karena ini terkait dengan ilmu bunyi.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Kata Patuha berasal dari kata Pak Tua. Orang-orang setempat sering menyebutnya gunung sepuh. Mereka percaya, orang-orang tua yang dihormati dan disegani bersemayam di puncak gunung. Para sesepuh itu, menurut juru kunci Gunung Patuha, mengadakan sidang secara berkala di puncak gunung yang disebut Puncak Kapuk.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Sidang ini diketuai oleh Eyang Jaga Satru. Para tetua yang lain adalah Eyang Rangga Sadena, Eyang Camat, Ngabai, Eyang Barabak, Eyang Baskon dan Eyang Jambrong.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Beberapa penduduk setempat sering melihat secara gaib sekumpulan domba berbulu putih. Domba gaib itu disebut domba lukuta dan dipercaya muncul secara gaib saat para leluhur sedang bersidang. Pengalaman melihat peristiwa yang dianggap gaib itu membuat penduduk setempat tidak berani mendaki atau berbuat sembarangan di seputar gunung.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">
<p style="text-align:justify;margin:0;"><strong>Aroma Belerang</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nGIWcO_J4yA/STZgfDWeFaI/AAAAAAAABJk/C-kUUvKSHr0/s320/Junghuhn+Kawah+Putih.jpg"><img class="alignright" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nGIWcO_J4yA/STZgfDWeFaI/AAAAAAAABJk/C-kUUvKSHr0/s320/Junghuhn+Kawah+Putih.jpg" alt="" width="320" height="202" /></a>Berita keangkeran Gunung Patuha ini sampai ke telinga seorang cendikiawan Eropa terkemuka yaitu <a href="http://dieny-yusuf.com/2007/12/12/franz-wilhelm-junghuhn/" target="_self">Dr Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn</a> (1809 &#8211; 1864). Dr Junghuhn saat itu tinggal di kawasan tanah Priangan untuk mengembangkan tanaman kina.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Berkat jasanya Indonesia menjadi negara pengekspor kina terbesar di abad 19. Ia pula yang pertama kali menulis laporan ilmiah tentang Pulau Jawa dan Sumatera. Keelokan pegunungan Priangan membuat dirinya memutuskan menetap di tanah Priangan sampai wafat di rumahnya yang menghadap Gunung Tangkuban Perahu.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Sikap skeptis <a href="http://dieny-yusuf.com/2007/12/12/franz-wilhelm-junghuhn/" target="_self">Dr Junghuhn</a> membawa dirinya dan beberapa penduduk setempat di tahun 1837 melawan mitos yang membuat orang enggan mendaki Gunung Patuha. Ia menemukan alasan mengapa burung-burung enggan melintasi Gunung Patuha. Kawah yang terdapat di puncak gunung menguarkan aroma belerang yang menyengat sehingga binatang pun menghindarinya.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Kawah itu digenangi air sehingga membentuk danau yang sangat indah. Air bening dingin yang berasal dari mata air mengalir ke arah danau kawah menjadi air danau yang hangat. Danau kawah itu dikelilingi tebing-tebing dan pohon-pohon rimbun.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Pepohonan di salah satu bagian tebing nampak hangus seperti terbakar api. Nampaknya asap belerang hanya bertiup ke salah satu bagian tebing sehingga menghanguskan pepohonan di bagian itu.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Pada dinding tebing yang mengitari kawah terdapat beberapa gua. Menurut penduduk setempat gua itu sering dikunjungi orang yang ingin mendapatkan &#8216;ilmu&#8217; atau kekayaan dengan bersemedi di dalamnya. Seorang pemandu menyebutkan beberapa nama terkenal yang sering terlihat di kawah tersebut.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">
<p style="text-align:justify;margin:0;"><strong>Berwarna Putih</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Pada saat matahari bersinar cerah air danau berwarna putih. Mungkin itu sebabnya orang menamai danau kawah itu Kawah Putih. Pada saat lain air danau berwarna biru. Saat matahari terbenam air danau bisa berwarna-warni indah. Saat SENIOR mengunjungi Kawah Putih air danau sedang berwarna hijau muda lembut.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Kawah Putih dan sebuah kawah lain di puncak bagian barat terbentuk akibat letusan Gunung Patuha pada abad X dan XII. Ketinggian Kawah Putih adalah 2.194 meter di atas permukaan laut. Sedang ketinggian Gunung Patuha adalah 2.434 meter di atas permukaan laut.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Suhu udara di waktu pagi sekitar 15 sampai 20 derajat Celcius. Jaket, syal atau apa pun yang bisa menghangatkan badan sebaiknya disiapkan sebelum pergi ke Kawah Putih karena udara yang cukup dingin. Di musim kemarau suhu di pagi hari lebih rendah dibanding musim hujan.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">
<p style="text-align:justify;margin:0;"><strong>Pil Belerang Penyembuh Kulit</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Obyek wisata Kawah Putih berjarak sekitar 46 kilometer dari kota Bandung. Lokasi obyek wisata Kawah Putih tidak sulit ditemukan. Di tepi jalan raya Ciwidey menuju Rancabali terdapat penunjuk arah menuju Kawah Putih yang cukup besar.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Dari pos penjualan tiket perjalanan menuju Kawah Putih masih harus ditempuh sejauh 6 kilometer. Jalan yang ditempuh menanjak serta berkelok dan tidak selebar jalan raya Ciwidey. Di sepanjang perjalanan itu tak jarang tampak sekelompok penambang belerang.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Sumber daya belerang yang terdapat di Kawah Putih tidak lama setelah ditemukan Dr. Junghuhn dieksploitasi oleh pemerintah kolonial Belanda. Pabrik belerang Zwavel Ontgining Kawah Putih didirikan di dekat kawah. Pada saaat Jepang menduduki Indonesia pabrik itu diberi nama Kenzaka Yokoya Ciwidey. Pabrik itu diawasi secara ketat oleh tentara pendudukan Jepang dan didayagunakan untuk kepentingan militer.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Penambangan belerang saat ini masih dilakukan oleh penduduk setempat. Pengunjung Kawah putih sering memunguti butir-butir belerang sebesar kerikil yang berwarna kuning bening di seputaran tepi danau kawah.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;">Butir belerang itu sering dikonsumsi seperti layaknya minum obat keluaran pabrik. Butiran kuning bening itu dipercaya bisa menyembuhkan penyakit kulit.</p>
