VALUE DISPLACEMENT IN THE TRANSFORMATION OF DAARUT TAUHID ISLAMIC BOARDING SCHOOL INTO SPIRITUAL TOURISM
An Observation of Social Construction

That Islamic boarding school is potential to be an attractive spiritual tourism has made the foundation of Daarut Tauhid consider this potential as one of business opportunities for several businesses they run. The decision to run tourism in this area causes several transformations on physic and social components. Along with this, it also causes resistance to social groups that are involved in the transformation process. This resistance has possibility to hamper the spiritual tourism development. The purpose of this study is to 1) obtain a clear picture of social process experienced by an Islamic boarding school to be a tourist destination; 2) identify the social effect of transformation; 3) investigate the cost and benefit as a result of transformation to be a tourist destination.
This study used social technology construction approach to investigate the social process happened in the area during the transformation period. To describe the social process, it used qualitative approach through a case study method with descriptive analysis technique. Furthermore, the method of snowball and following the actor used to identify social group in the area of study. The result of this study indicates that there are some social groups that are classified into two groups: pro and contra to spiritual tourism. There is no negotiation between the two groups. The negotiation just takes place between the groups that get financials benefits from the transformation. In addition, the emerging of charismatic figure (Kyai) as a dominant attraction in Islamic boarding school is one of attractions from the institution. Moreover, the study shows that tourism development in this area has potential to distract culture values. For this reason, spiritual tourism development in Islamic boarding school should be carried out not only through considering infrastructure and institution but also cultural tourism approach implementation. In this way, the value that has already existed in the institution is still preserved.
